As part of this, Apple is also adding subscriptions to the app store, allowing app owners (and newspapers specifically) to charge a recurring fee, as opposed to selling single-copies. Apple will take their usual 30% cut and keep all the customer data (since you are paying to the App store).

Subscribers to the Wall Street Journal for the iPad, is limited to the iPad. You cannot read on your Android phone, on your home computer, nor on your computer at work.

You are not buying a subscription to the Wall Street Journal; you are buying a subscription to the WSJ in the App Store.

This is the old traditional world at work here. A world where you focus on creating packages of news (newspapers), focused on a specific output – in the past, paper, but now the iPad.

This is not how the world works anymore. Today everyone has an average of 2.3 devices + we increasingly use many different types of software. Media companies need to adapt to this.

• The Use of Twitter by America’s Newspapers (via @xdamman) – Twitter was seemingly everywhere in 2009, with sports stars, celebrities, politicians and journalists using the micro blogging platform to promote everything from themselves to their employers to the issues they advocate for. After several years of assessing the general online presence of the top 100 U.S. newspapers, this year we decided to produce a study specifically about how newspapers and journalists are utilizing Twitter as a way of promoting their content and interacting with readers.
• YouTube video leads to $30 million Hollywood contract – A producer from Uruguay who uploaded a short film to YouTube in November 2009 has been offered a $30m (£18.6m) contract to make a Hollywood film.
  The movie will be sponsored by director Sam Raimi, whose credits include the Spiderman and Evil Dead films.
  Fede Alvarez’s short film “Ataque de Panico!” (Panic Attack!) featured giant robots invading and destroying Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.
  It is 4 mins 48 seconds long and was made on a budget of $300 (£186).

Un signe de plus des tensions générées dans les groupes de presse par l’émergence d’Internet, et dans lequel on trouve l’impact indirect, inattendu, de la loi Hadopi.
• Vers un journalisme sans agences de presse? (article de @xternisien, via @valeriepailler ) – Tous sont d’accord pour dire que l’absence de l’AFP oblige à “travailler à l’ancienne”, en passant des coups de téléphone et en cherchant davantage l’information. Ce qui donne finalement plus d’intérêt au métier.
• La guerre du Web, par Tim O’Reilly | Owni.fr – J’ai déjà expliqué les tentatives des grands pontes comme Facebook, Apple et News Corp de grignoter le modèle « des petits morceaux faiblement coordonnés » de l’Internet. Mais peut-être que le plus grand danger réside dans les monopoles qu’a engendré l’effet réseau du Web 2.0.
  Je ne cesse de répéter, à propos du Web 2.0, qu’il s’appuie sur un système auto-entretenu : plus il y a d’utilisateurs, plus l’expérience est intéressante. C’est un système qui tend naturellement vers des monopoles.
• Les nouveaux défis de l’agence Capa – LeMonde.fr – Comment accommode-t-on à un nouvel outil une institution essentiellement composée de journalistes formés à l’écriture télévisuelle de l’enquête ? En l’occurrence, c’est de la méthode très pragmatique de la chaîne américaine CNN dont s’est inspiré Hervé Chabalier. Il voulait impulser cette ouverture avant son départ, afin que Capa puisse “faire face aux secousses de la révolution qui est en marche”. Ainsi, pour que chacun puisse penser télé, Web, téléphone mobile, etc., Capa a amorcé le grand virage du numérique en trois étapes.
• YouTube launches YouTube Direct for media publishers: request, review and rebroadcast YouTube clips (via @jeanlucr ) – YouTube Direct allows you to embed the upload functionality of YouTube directly into your own site, enabling your organization to request, review, and re-broadcast user-submitted videos with ease. News organizations can ask for citizen reporting; nonprofits can call-out for support videos around social campaigns; businesses can ask users to submit promotional videos about your brand. With YouTube Direct, the opportunities to connect directly with the YouTube community are endless.
• Des comptes Twitter payants (avec analytics,feedback,etc) avant la fin de l’année ( @biz sur la BBC) – Stone said that Twitter would begin to offer commercial services this year.
  “One of the first things we are going to do explicitly is commercial accounts,” he said.
  “Twitter will always be free to everyone but you will be able to pay for an additional layer of access to learn more about your Twitter account – get some feedback, some analytics, become a better ‘Twitterer’.”

Ils doivent se faire un nom, dans la logique du « personnal branding ». Entre le média et le public, il y a un journaliste qui engage aussi sa crédibilité. Il est probable que certains médias deviennent des agrégations de marques personnelles, dans la logique du Huffingtonpost, par exemple. D’ailleurs, les sites média traditionnels ouvrent des blogs aux journalistes. Citons Rue89 ou le Figaro qui, en quelques mois, a mis en place une véritable plateforme de blogs de journalistes spécialisés.
  La seconde tendance que je perçois concerne l’organisation de la porosité des médias. Ce ne sont plus des boites fermées. Les blogueurs ont un rôle important à y jouer. Il va falloir organiser ces communautés, pour tenter de faire remonter les informations de qualité et, dans l’autre sens, les faire diffuser par le plus grand nombre.

The collapse triggered dramatic turmoil in global finance. For the first time in 60 years the economy’s growth ceased; the world’s accounts consequently find themselves looking far different.
• Niiu, le journal papier personnalisé grâce à Internet (via @gammaire ) – n quotidien pas comme les autres a vu le jour en Allemagne. Niiu, [un mot inventé pour la sonorité « new », NDRL] est distribué par la poste dans les boîtes aux lettres de ses abonnés depuis ce 16 novembre 2009. A speaking gig in China would have been a great opportunity to sing the praises of decentralized, standards-based, interoperable, free-market competition in communication technologies.
